BTC: A nod to the diaspora

Posted by Elwin Green on August 9, 2012 at 12:55 AM

BTC stands for "Behind the Curtain," and signifies a post relating to how "Homewood Nation" works, and thoughts about journalism in general.

I came across this item today on the Tribune-Review's website: an obituary for Margaret McGill Varoga.

I mention it here because it appears from the obituary that Ms. Varoga was a native of Homewood and spent her early years here. The odds that anyone who lives in Homewood now would remember her are pretty slim, but she is a small part of Homewood's history.

I believe that one of the keys to the renewal of Homewood is the rediscovery, acknowledgement and celebration of Homewood's history - and not just the time since it became a mostly Black neighborhood. A full and honest embrace of Homewood's history will celebrate the Irish, German and Italian families and individuals who all lived here at one time or another (and if you're a member of the Homewood diaspora of an ethnicity I haven't named, please forgive me - it's a show of ignorance, not of disrespect).

The next version of Homewood Nation will include some sort of "Diaspora" section, specifically for news about Homewoodians who aren't here anymore.
