I'm receiving an award.
More precisely, the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation has awarded me a Community Service Award for "Homewood Nation."
I'll receive the award on July 19, at the 29th annual Robert L. Vann Awards banquet, to be held at the O'Hara Student Center in Oakland.
I'm one of three Community Service Award recipients. The other two are:
-- Heinz Endowments for its African American Men and Boys Initiative, created in 2007 to identify and increase opportunities for African American men and boys in this region.
-- Chuck Sanders of Urban Lending Solutions for the creation of Chuck Sander’s Charities (CSC) to fund and support existing charities and youth programs, especially efforts aimed at preventing violence and initiatives that support education.
The majority of the awards given that evening, as every year, will go to individual journalists for "outstanding achievements in journalism related to the coverage of the African-American community of Western Pennsylvania." They cover categories in newspaper, magazine, and broadcast journalism.
The press release with the complete list of awardees is here (under "Events").
