This is not an actual story; it is a very lightly edited press release. In this case, I am merely passing along information about a couple of events. The first one happens this evening, and I apologize to the producers and to you readers for the late notice.
Pittsburgh, Pa. – In a joint effort with East Liberty’s Kelly Strayhorn Theater, BTP is set to host ‘Pittsburgh Left behind’ an open discussion on the decline of quality education and achievement in inner city schools. The discussion will be hosted Aug 1, 2012 at the Homewood Carnegie Library Auditorium. This discussion will make way for Reenah Golden’s play “No Child,” which will be performed at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater August 3rd and 4th. The play takes a closer look at the social inequalities and achievement gap which the No Child Left Behind Act has aimed to fix since its creation in 2001.
“No Child” is a one-woman play that traces the efforts of a young teacher to engage a class of uninspired and underachieving 10th graders in a tough Bronx high school by challenging them to put on a play. While it may be funny and buoyant at times, “No Child” refuses to shy away from the sobering truths of the urban lives and neighborhoods it depicts. “No Child” celebrates the positive difference one passionate person and a class of inspired kids can make in a troubled place.
Reenah Golden is a performance poet, spoken word artist, actress, social activist and educator. For more than 15 years, she has used the power of the spoken word to effect change and create new ways of thinking.
Just as Reenah’s character confronts the daunting task of tackling inequality, so too has BTP, as it continues to become an involved part of the Pittsburgh community covering the city’s grassroots activism.
Come out and see how one person can make all the difference as Reenah Golden takes the Kelly Strayhorn stage to perform “No Child. “The play is a pay-what-you-can event, with all donations warmly accepted.
