What does Homewood produce?

I asked myself that question this morning, and my thoughts in response led to "I want" questions, like, "What do I WANT Homewood to produce?" and "What do I WANT Homewood to be known for producing?"

And I wrote a sentence that I just realized was me giving myself an instruction, if not a command:

"Make Homewood world-famous for producing entertainment."

For the neighborhood that produced Ahmad Jamal, Billy Strayhorn, John Edgar Wideman and Antoine Fuqua, that may not be as much of a stretch as it sounds like. But it is still a stretch. I wrote a post on my personal blog, "ReVisions," about what that means for me personally. The nub of it is: growing my company, Luminaria Productions, can help to establish Homewood as a hub of entertainment production.

With all that I have done and am doing with the Save Race Street Committee, Block Watch Plus, Operation Better Block, the Homewood Children's Village - with all that, growing Luminaria Productions may be the best and most important thing I can do for Homewod.

Block Watch Plus has a residents-only meeting tonight at 6 in the South Conference Room of the Homewood-Brushton YMCA. I will ask everyone there to say what they want for Homewood. Tomorrow, I will share some of the responses.

In asking that type of question of a group before, I have tended to forget to give my own answer. So in case I don't chime in tonight, I'll give it here, now.

I want Homewood to be beautiful, prosperous, safe, green, connected, global and really, really smart - and world-famous as the home of Luminaria Productions, which produces entertainment that moves the world.

What do you want Homewood to produce? What do you want Homewood to be famous for producing?

Historically. there have been numerous successful Homewood Citizens that have moved on to all areas of the US. We do recognize that Homewood is a very special place, and I recognize that my roots are there in Homewood. I plan on providing all input and positive plans to continue to improve the neighborhood. Please know that better days are coming....

Mr. King, thanks for your response. I agree about successful Homewood citizens being everywhere. That is why I believe so strongly in using today's tools to connect, and ultimately to collaborate. I look forward to your further input!

My vision of Homewood/Westinghouse High School area is that of an education Mecca. Most of the people you mentioned in your article are highly intelligent. They were able to channel their gifts of intelligence toward an artistic craft and thus gain the fame. I believe that Homewood/Westinghouse High produced thousands of highly intelligent and creative individuals. Their talents might not have been in the highly visual venue of arts (or sports), but perhaps in other areas such as education, politics, law, etc.

My proposal is to make Homewood a Black Educational Mecca. Using the Alleghany Community College (Homewood Branch) as the anchor, I would build a supporting cast of educational entities such as:
1. Coursesa classes with free tutoring available onsite. Coursesa is the latest rave in education. Some very prestige?s universities are providing free online courses worldwide. These classes range from entry level humanities studies to high level mathematics and science entries. Homewood (library, churches, YMCA) could provide the classrooms and volunteers could help with the tutoring.

2. A building should be dedicated to hosing a wide range of extension campuses of various Black universities and colleges. Examples of two PA urban black campuses:
Cheyney University of PA In state tuition: $6,412 yr.
Lincoln University of PA In stste tuition: $7,578 yr.
Both urban campus are located in Philly.
Cheapest state (urban) universities in Pittsburgh:
University of Pittsburgh Instate tuition: $15,378 yr
Penn State at New Kensington In state tuition: $12,474 yr

3 Homewood is easily accessible by the Busway and other major public transportation. An education complex (Homewood Urban University Complex) should draw people from thru out the Greater Pittsburgh area.

That's a pretty big chunk of thinking there, Mr. Wright. To avoid confusion, I need to correct a typo. The education company that you're referring to is Coursera, found online at www.coursera.org - there's some controversery about them, but that may just be because some people feel threatened by them. Anyway, I had not heard of them before now, so thanks for the new info!

As for the overall idea of an education Mecca - to me that sounds remarkably similar to the suggestion made in the Bridging the Busway plan that the area between Hamilton, Bennett, Lang and Homewood become a "Youth, Arts and Education Campus." Take a look at the section of the plan beginning on page 112:

I don't know if anyone here is thinking in terms of bringing specific schools to Homewood, but those tuition numbers are pretty compelling!
