Homewood Welcomes Marathoners

Posted by Elwin Green on May 5, 2013 at 10:25 AM

House of Manna pastor, Rev. Eugene "Free Dom " Blackwell, was among the volunteers at the Homewood Liquids Station in today's running of the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon.

As I write this, thousands of runners are still passing through Homewood as they reach the 17.6 mile mark in the 2013 Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon

At that mark, the Homewood Liquids Station is set up in front of Homewood House, a senior residence in the 7100 block of Frankstown Avenue.

There, scores of volunteers serve up water, Gatorade, and lots of cheers, with an enthusiasm that led runners from previous marathons to name the Homewood station as one of their favorite spots along their 26-mile course through the City.

This is the fifth year that Operation Better Block Inc. has organized volunteers for the marathon, said OBB staffer Jose Diaz. This year the event's sponsor, Dick's Sporting Goods, added a Cinco de Mayo theme to the effort, outfitting volunteers with sombreros and tambourines.

Homewood may also be the only station that boosted runners with a bit of mid-70s jam:

The Homewood Chronicles

Oct. 2005 - March 2010

Reports from a community in transition

In October 2005, after a bullet came through his living room window, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Elwin Green began writing "My Homewood," the first blog on the P-G's website. For 4 1/2 years, "My Homewood" shared stories of tragedy and beauty, of perplexity and hope - stories that live again in "The Homewood Chronicles."
