Lucyna and Ayres have recently completed construction on their new home, which is in the final stages of achieving the rigorous Passive House certification. GBA has followed the couple’s journey, hosting Lucy and Ayres for an informational presentation about their home design (2013); leading two construction tours of the house (2015); and co-presenting the screening of Sustainability Pioneers, which profiled the house construction (2017). Now it’s time to celebrate with Lucy and Ayres since they have just moved into the home and are awaiting final PHIUS certification!

During this tour and celebration (which will include light refreshments), Lucy and Ayres will share in-depth information about their goals for the project, material selection, passive strategies, and victories and challenges they faced while completing this project. This house is a duplex, so we will be touring the vacant side of the house, which is currently on the market (bonus if you happen to be looking for an incredibly green and efficient new house!). This allows more room for guests and will give us the chance to get an up-close look at the home’s features.

A passive building involves extreme energy efficiency (targeting 60-70% energy use reduction) and performance verification that is proven through an air tightness test with rigorous passing standards. This particular home also features a green roof, permeable pavement, durable and environmentally-friendly materials, and more.

The Homewood Chronicles

Oct. 2005 - March 2010

Reports from a community in transition

In October 2005, after a bullet came through his living room window, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Elwin Green began writing "My Homewood," the first blog on the P-G's website. For 4 1/2 years, "My Homewood" shared stories of tragedy and beauty, of perplexity and hope - stories that live again in "The Homewood Chronicles."
