Zone 5 UPDATE: ShotSpotters coming

Posted by Elwin Green on August 26, 2013 at 1:55 PM

I just received a call from Commander Timothy O' Connor of Zone 5. Apparently, he can scratch one item off the wishlist that he shared in a meeting with Homewood leaders at State Rep. Ed Gainey's office Friday morning - the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police will receive the gunshot detectors, called ShotSpotters, that he spoke about,.

O'Connor had expressed consternation that there seemed to be a holdup within the Bureau in getting the contract with ShotSpotters. Today, he learned that "a contract agreement has been worked out."

"That's an issue that has resolved itself," he said.

He said that he does not know yet when the devices will be delivered and installed.

This story is the third in a series

you may have described what a ShotSpotter is a previous post (and the name is almost self-explanatory), but what is it and how does it work? Thanks for the update Mr. Green!

Hey Ms. Abrams. - ShotSpotters are audio surveillance systems that identify gunshots by their sound, pinpoint their locations, and transmit the data back to police. The P-G did a feature about them when City Council budgeted for their installation -
