The east side of Homewood Ave. from the Busway to Hamilton Ave. is almost completely empty. I have long imagined that area as the site for a complex that would include a movie theatre, first-floor retail shops and offices, and condos on upper floors.

What would YOU like to see there?

I would love to see Homewood Ave become an education mecca.  Either Lincoln University or Cheney State University (both are state related institutions) could install a degree completion program.  We would then have an African-American university complex that would draw students from around the Pittsburgh area.  The education cost would be resonable and it would be accessable.  All types of businesses would locate in the area.

Albert, when you say "a degree completion program," the first thing I think of is a program that would allow students from CCAC's Homewood-Brushton campus to finish the last two years of a four-year degree. Is that what you mean?

Yes! Many African-American colleges are offering a degree completion program. Since both Cheney and Lincoln are state related universities (meaning the tuition should be reasonable), I think they should be approached about starting a degree completion program in Pittsburgh. Both universities are historically - Black institutions which would fit in well with the CCAC's Homewood-Brushton campus. Most of the other state universities have branch locations throughout PA. If there is a market, they will go there. We need to market the Homewood area as a most convenient location to support an African-American University. Pittsburgh is betting it's' future on the growth generated by the University of Pittsburgh/ Carnegie Mellon University and the many other local colleges and universities. None of these institutions are structured to grow our needs. I know that there are colleges that would provide on-line programs for degree completion, but we need classroom instructors.

Lincoln University is located outside of Philly, bur has a graduate center in Philly.

Cheney University has an urban center in Philly that has many programs to continue education.

Let's make Home the education center for African-Americans in Western PA.

We need to get some other folks into this convo - preferably someone connected with CCAC, or Lincoln, or Cheyney...hmm...do I know anyone at any of those august institutions?

Okay, got one prospect; I'll see if I can draw him in.
