On Sunday 08/14/2011 Baptist Temple Church held its annual "Community Celebration" which was a combination of the traditional "Family and Friends Day" along with Back to School activities.  It was warm, festive and lots of fun.  I left my own church service early and joined in the celebration with my three year old great-niece.  It was nice to see many of our SRSC members, other current and former Homewood residents and even State Rep Joseph Preston frequenting the crowded intersection at Race and Sterrett Streets.

This is not new to Baptist Temple or other churches in Homewood.  What was so nice was the feeling of community.  Children were playing games, getting treats, receiving school supplies and even free hair cuts for the young men.  Pastor Lyde did the drawing of various prizes and giveaways as well as keep a friendly atmosphere as the church "celebration leader" for the day.  I hope Save Race Street Committee (SRSC) is able to collaborate with them next year to make this a two day event.  In the meantime this is a great way to keep our community connected to one another.

Nice job to the members of Baptist Temple Church!
