I don't remember Sister Gertrude's first name. If she had one, she didn't share it. I loved Sister Gertrude, but she believed in discipline. I was slapped along with two other girls for talking. Another time, she hit my calves with a ruler because I kicked some letters on the ground. Those nuns didn't mess around, believe me. By any chance do you remember two little black girls hit by a streetcar on Hamilton Avenue and Murtland? I had come home from kindergarten and saw them lying on the sidewalk right after it happened. You never forget it. I can still see them.

Mary Lou,

After I saw your reply about your first grade Nun I realized that she was my first grade Nun!!!! Wasn't her first name Ann?
Cute story. My first day of grade school. Mom took me to school and after a short time I became a crying little boy who wanted his "Mommy". School called my mother who came an took me up to Islay's for a pushup. Remember those? After eating that she bought me a cone and then took me back to class. The rest is history.
Take care out your way.

Mary Lou,

My first grade Nun was Sister Ann Florence. I was in love with her. Regarding Holy Communion. I remember the nuns making us practice taking communion and they used Necco Wafers!!!! Told us we could not chew but I think we did anyway. Point Breeze was just two streets away from my place on McPherson Blvd. Used to have a lot of friends at Central Catholic that came from St. Bede. Do you recognize any of these names from Holy Rosary? Corrine Driscoll, Theresa Casey, Paul Butalla, Paul Deasy, Eugene Loyd, Edward Miller? I have a picture taken in the yard of the school, don't know the date but if I can figure out how to upload it I will pass it along.
