SPORTS: Here comes the marathon!

Posted by homewoodnation on May 3, 2012 at 11:00 AM

In case anyone doesn't know yet, the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon will bring thousands of runners to the streets of Homewood on Sunday, May 6. And that means that dozens of volunteers will assemble in front of Homewood House, the senior residence at 7130 Frankstown Avenue, to serve at the 17.6 mile fluid station...

Volunteers at the Homewood fluid station offer hydration to runners in last year's Dick's Sporting Goods PIttsburgh Marathon.

The fluid station is an outreach of Operation Better Block, Inc., and community organizer Demi Kolke says that about 40 volunteers have already signed up for Sunday. But they'll gladly take more, to serve for any part of a volunteer day that will run from about 6:30 am, when they'll be setting up, to shortly after 1 pm, when the last runners are likely to pass the station.  Being able to come and go when you like is only one of the...

10. Like we said: You can come when you like and leave when you like.

9. According to Yahoo Weather, it looks like Sunday will be a gorgeously great day to be outside.

8. There will be MUSIC, by DJ Nick Nice.

7. There will be FOOD: burgers and hot dogs provided by Larry Tyler, whom many Homewood residents know by sight if not by name - he operates a food cart on Frankstown in front of the gazebo at Homewood Avenue.

6. If you live in Homewood, it will be a lot easier to get to the fluid station than to get to church, and you can still pray while you're there - like, for people who are trying to get to church.

5. The Westinghouse drumline!

4. You will get to serve people.

3. You will get to encourage people.

2. People who have run for 17+ miles will really, really appreciate your service and encouragement.

And the #1 reason for volunteering at the Homewood Fluid Station is....

1. You might get to serve and encourage me (okay, maybe next year)

1. You might get to be on TV ("Look, that's me handing that girl that Gatorade!")!

Seriously, the size of the event does mean that the Homewood fluid station could wind up on TV. And any positive presentation of Homewood on TV is good for all of us.

To join the fun, call Brooke Burchette at (412) 731-1908.
